What do I do when Fortis calls me?
MUST DO-ESSENTIAL-RIGHT NOW
Lock your meter. For info on obtaining a locking device, email [email protected]. Steel rings available in Kelowna prepaid $30. Special locks $ 17.
When you receive your card or phone call from Fortis, do not panic. The procedure to stop the installation is pretty straightforward but a little time consuming. Fortis must be contacted 3 times, (you send - they respond, you send again - they respond again, you send again - they respond again). This gives you a documented paper trail, stating you do not want a wireless meter.
First step: Write a registered letter to Fortis stating your name, address and customer ID. number. State in the letter that you have received their notice and will not accept a smart meter or advanced meter on your property. Also, that you demand to keep your analog meter that has served you well for many years. Ask that they respond immediately to your letter. Send the letter registered mail which can be tracked through Canada Post website – registered tracking. A registered letter costs about $10.00. You can double register as well.
Second step: After you receive the reply letter from Fortis, you must send a second registered letter to them, politely restating that you do not want the wireless meter because of all the potential health and financial concerns. Again, ask for their prompt reply.
Third step: The same as step two. Be sure to clearly state in each letter or verbal communication that you DO NOT WANT A WIRELESS METER.
If you are contacted by telephone, ask for the callers name and employee number. ( see Testimonials on this site) Keep excellent documentation.
Although sending a photocopied registered letter provides the best documentation, the second option is to call the Customer Service department of your provider. The number is on your bill. Calling their Customer Service is also a good option if you do not get a timely response to your letter. Once again, clearly state that you do not want a wireless meter installed, being sure to get the employee name and ID number of the person taking your call.
The third option is to e-mail or FAX. Once again, all communications must be printed or photocopied for documentation.
On your third and final communication with this company be sure to clearly state that this is your THIRD refusal of their wireless meter. Ask them to acknowledge the fact that you have fulfilled the legal requirement of stating your case three different times. Their acknowledgement is necessary.
**** IMPORTANT NOTICE: Some people are under the impression that they have spoken to Fortis on the phone and both sides have come to a comfortable agreement that no new meter will be installed. Please be warned, historically in Canada and the US, these companies are completely unethical when the time comes to install the meters. They state you never contacted them, there is no paperwork or contract, they deny all communication between the two parties. If this applies to you, you must gather all your documentation, put together a letter and register mail it to Fortis requesting a reply. There are many examples of this dishonesty happening which shows the moral bankruptcy of these companies.
After you have sent your registered letters, emails, FAX or made documented verbal contact with Fortis, you must call the installation company Corix 1-855-612-7288 telling them you have contacted Fortis and informed them you will not be accepting a wireless meter on your property. Please keep an accurate record of phone calls, photocopies of all letters, names and dates of all people you spoke to from the companies. Very important!!
Included here are some of the less than honorable bully tactics used by Fortis. When you tell them that you do not want their wireless meter, that you want to keep your original contract that includes your analog meter, you will probably be told that it cannot be done, you have no choice, it is illegal to lock your meter, fire department and police need access to your meter, your power will be cut off. All these untrue excuses are part of the professional program designed to intimidate you. They may also tell you, you have no contract with them enabling you to keep the analog meters, but you actually do because you have faithfully paid your power bill. When you call the service department, they will probably forward your call to one of the trained enforcers. Be cool about it. Remember, you are just there to deliver your message and get her name and ID number. All communications with them must be calm and cordial. Remember this is not a confrontation but an opportunity to stand up for the power of your personal choice.
